Car Mechanic Interview Questions?

Yo, I have an interview for a car mechanic, since I’m small and look about 14 I’m a little nervous, its a really good opportunity to get into, as it is Mercedes.  So guys, what should I do to get in? What should I wear, Dress smart, or will that be overdressed and make me look like I don’t want to get dirty, when mechanican is a dirty job, .. what should I do what questions?

WP Mechanic answers:

Don’t say “Yo”, dress smart, don’t say “mechanican” and hope they hire you to do oil changes. I’ve had probably 4-5 REAL jobs working as a mechanic/technician and dressing nice just shows that you serious about the interview. They care MUCH more about what you KNOW and what you can do for them to make them money. Don’t worry, you can’t fake the funk when it becomes time to “get dirty”, they WILL let you know pretty fast if you can’t hack it. Hopefully they will have patience to train. You aren’t ready to be a line tech, trust me you aren’t, hope to get a leg in doing oil changes. Everyone has to start somewhere, we all have…

Car (Mechanic) Questions . . .?

Can someone please tell me the price range of these items and the disadvantages & advantages of having them?

Diesel/Hybrid Engine
Automatic Transmission
Manual Transmission
Power Brakes
Power Steering
Cruise Control
Full-service, full-size spare tire
Power Seats
Tinted Glass
Power Windows
Central Locking System

*** If you are unable to answer all, no problem and thank you for your help!

WP Mechanic answers:

Ill answer them, just give me time!

Can someone please tell me the price range of these items and the disadvantages & advantages of having them?

Diesel/Hybrid Engine – These a more expensive to buy as the car is more efficient, fuel will cost slightly more. But maybe over a number of years you will get your money back on the car.

Automatic Transmission – This is easier to drive, but generally consume more petrol (fuel) depending on where you live they can cost more to fix than a manual. In USA they are cheap to repair, in the UK they are expensive to repair as no one really drives them.

Manual Transmission – Manual is cheaper and more efficient, they can be harder to drive as you have to change gears. I do not find this too hard and prefer manual.

Power Brakes – This makes breaking lighter, it will assist you when breaking. I used to have a car without power breaks and it is very heavy and harder to break.

Power Steering – Once again I recently sold my car that didn’t have power steering. They are much heavier as all of the weight of the car is down to you to be able to turn the steering wheel.

Cruise Control – This is not essential, it consumes fuel. Its only really useful on the motorway (highway) and could be considered a danger if your fall asleep.

Full-service, full-size spare tire – Full service and full spare tire are good, space saver spares are not so good.

Power Seats – This is a luxury not really essential

Tinted Glass – This will probably put your insurance costs up and its not essential.

Power Windows – Luxury but it shouldn’t effect your insurance.

Central Locking System – This is also a luxury that shouldn’t effect your insurance.

Car mechanic question went over a pothole and I lost power steering, acceleration and the dash lights went ?

I drive a 2006 Pontiac Pursuit. I just went over a sizeable pothole, and right after I was not able to accelerate or steer (it is possible that my engine shut off, but I am not entirely certain of that). I stopped, shut off and on and everything seemed fine. Is this normal?  Should I have something checked out?

WP Mechanic answers:

You may have a loose connection in the ign.circuit, a bump won’t normally shut the engine off, the inertia switch on the other hand is designed to do just that. It’s function is to cut off the fuel pump in the event of a crash. It would be a good idea to go ahead and trip it and then reset it in case its in a half trip condition. That would cause arcing and may cause it to fail unexpectedly and you’ll be walking. Look in your owners manual for the location and you can trip it by striking it with a rubber hammer be careful not to break it, the reset button is usually located on top of switch box.

car mechanic question on chevy 1999 camaro z-28?

Just got the car 3 weeks ago it is strong and has been well taken care of. It does have his wear and tear. Question: rear axle needs to lube but cannot find plug.  If any one has good experience and offer advise do tell.

Thanks

WP Mechanic answers:

I have built many rear ends over the years. One good way of locating the fill plug is; The oil level in them “must” be at, or just above the center line of the axles because this oil runs out the axle tubes to lube the wheel bearings too, so if you will go around the whole housing at about axle level, you will find the plug. There are two types of plugs. One; Protrudes outwards, and has a square head on it for a wrench. Two; It recesses into the case (housing), and may be full of dirt & hard to see. It should use a square 3/8″ drive short extension, or breaker bar to remove it with. I have seen some that use a torx type bit on them, so its “very” important to clean it out, and the surrounding area too. You want the tool to go into it as far as it can, or you run a risk of stripping it out. Also; you don’t want dirt to get into the gears, so a can of WD-40 and a small screwdriver works great to get it all clean. Use a hammer to tap the tool as far as it will go into the plug to insure you have a good bite on it before attempting to remove it. It’s also a good idea to use some teflon tape, or sealer on the plug when you put it back in. The type of oil used in them is critical, so you will want to make certain its the correct lube for your rear end “before” you add any to it.
Glad to help out, good luck!!!

postheadericon Muffler Auto Repair

Muffler auto repair comes built-in with the package of owning a car, the same way you must service your engine or change your tires. However, first you must understand what a muffler is. A muffler, or silencer, is a device that is installed over the exhaust pipe of an engine to reduce the noise generated by the engine.

All car engines work in the same way. They have cylinders inside that contain pistons which move when combustion of fuel takes place in the cylinders. As you can imagine, when fuel combusts it is basically a small explosion and the waste gases of this explosion are released through the exhaust pipe. As a result, the noise made by the engine when it is operating is very loud and is reduced by a muffler.

Over time, with continuous usage mufflers tend to get worn away or damaged. This is where muffler auto repair is required. However, it is not only continuous usage that can lead to a muffler getting damaged. A muffler is located under the trunk of the car either on the right or left side or both. As a result, it is possible for the muffler to get damaged when the car is moving over a speed bump or at the foot of a sharp incline. All of this can lead to muffler damage and require muffler auto repair. You can get muffler auto repair at any garage or car repair center. However, most people tend to get their cars repaired by a manufacturer-approved service center. Some examples of well known, licensed muffler auto repair centers are Midas and Meineke.

Technically speaking, a damaged muffler will not cause any significant damage to your car or engine. The only thing that will change is the amount of noise generated by your car as it speeds down the road. However, this creates a different problem altogether. One other function carried out by the muffler is to make sure that no carbon monoxide fumes get into the cabin of your car. Carbon monoxide is a gas that is produced by your engine when it is in use through the burning of fuel. It is a colorless and odorless gas that, when inhaled for prolonged periods, can cause you to pass out. As you can imagine this is dangerous for all motorists. The only remedy is to drive with your windows rolled down. Also, driving without a muffler makes your car very noisy and can lead to local police pulling you over for loud exhaust noise.

When it comes to vehicle maintenance, muffler auto repair may not seem very important when compared to servicing the brakes or an oil change. However, keeping your muffler system well maintained will help you avoid a lot of unnecessary problems, and avoid one serious danger, that being carbon monoxide. Muffler auto repair, while probably not essential, is recommended.
